Out of all the courses on my academic schedule, I was not excited about the Professional Wiring course. I was hoping to have an equivalent credit from my alma mater to skip this course. After taking the course, I can say that it has strengthened my confidence, corrected old habits, and introduced new skills in my writing abilities. Below I have answered some questions of reflection about my experiences in the course.

Which assignment were you most proud of and why?

The assignment I am most proud of is the Negative Message assignment. The assignment showed me that I can be more direct in my messaging by avoiding fluff, which is one my poor habits. The Negative Message assignment will help me be more concise in my writings. It also proved that more detail does not always translate to better understanding.

What concrete skill did you learned this month that you will continue to use?

One concrete skill I’ve learned this month is how to avoid run-on sentences. Run-on sentences can be alleviated by using a simple period. I was shown that a short sentence is acceptable which can then be followed by additional sentences that include details. With the many thoughts I have while writing, a simple period not only relieves the stress of being misunderstood, but it also helps me to be more concise.

What piece of advice you received did you consider valuable?

A valuable piece of advice I received from my instructor was about being direct and concise. If I am confused in my writing, the reader will be confused as well. Before I begin writing, I must understand the who, why, and how of my writings. These questions must be answered prior to writing to avoid any confusion in my messaging.

How has your idea of how you represent yourself through writing in the professional world changed?

After this course, I am more confident in my writing abilities to produce and support my messaging as a professional and an artist. Before, my writings were plagued with long-winded wordy sentences that readers found confusing and daunting. Currently, I have a better ability to focus more on being concise and avoid run-on sentences.
